What is the story behind “Lost Along The Way”?

Lost Along The Way is a gathering of instrumental tracks that I wrote between 2007 and 2022. These were written for the various projects being pursued at the time, but for a range of reasons were left off the final release.

All were musically developed to the point where they were presented to the vocalist to work on – almost all had a final, or near to final vocal version – but were never fully completed.

They follow the 3-part blueprint which has been used for essentially all of my recordings for voice: 1. write a song for the vocalist with a structure based around a verse/chorus/bridge pattern (or something resembling that!); 2. allow the vocalist to manoeuvre lyrically and vocally, as they see fit; 3. work through the track to achieve optimum balance between music and vocals (length, additional rhythms etc.) to ensure the song is complete. These tracks did not go through that full process.

Though, in my humble opinion, it doesn’t make them any lesser. In fact, there are many that I hold particularly dear, and this is what drove me to complete this project. To get them ready for this release, I needed to do a little tweaking. Some of them needed to be shortened to make them work instrumentally. And others needed just that “bit more”. So that is what I did! At the very least, it provides an illustration of how I approach writing for vocalists. I hope that you enjoy!
